Well, I'm Back...

Maryland Deathfest was the best three days of my life, hands down. Even though Marduk and Pestilence didn't show up, we were treated to TWO fucking Bolt Thrower sets, one of which was inside. "Epic," is the only word to describe. Here's a short review of the 'fest:

Friday

Missed the first three bands because Bleeder and I went to the Babe Ruth Museum. Totally worth it, but I'm kind of bummed I missed Jig-Ai.

Sayyadina
– Only caught about half of their set, but it was cool.
Gnostic – Really bad.
Cattle Decapitation - Seen them like 5 times, so I didn't pay much attention.
Cephalic Carnage - Same as CxDx. Seeing "Black Metal Sabbath" was cool though.
Pigsty – Their set was a blast. Insane vocal performance, some drunk guy going apeshit and over the railing (twice) and inflatable sword fights in the pit.
Mayhem – Meh, didn't do a whole lot for me. I couldn't hear Attila for probably 90% of the set. I'm even less impressed now that I know they cut in to Asphyx's time.
Asphyx - FUCKING AMAZING. Van Drunen is a god and probably put out my two favorite performances of the 'fest. Awesome setlist, as they mostly played stuff off The Rack and The Last One On Earth.
Venomous Concept - Good. Definitely got better as their set went on. Kevin was drunk as hell and funny: "More alcohol in the monitors."
Victims – Awesome. First time hearing/seeing them and I loved it. Tons of energy and a great way to end the night.

Saturday

Drugs of Faith – Didn't watch.
Maruta – Only caught the last couple songs. It was okay.
Pretty Little Flower – Loved them...intense as fuck.
Unearthly Trance – I've never listened to them before, but they were heavier than elephant shit. Perfect set length too.
Crowpath – Moments of their set were really enjoyable, but for the most part, I couldn't get in to it.
Flesh Parade – Really, really awesome. The vocals blew my mind.
Weekend Nachos – I was in the bathroom for 5 minutes and missed all but one song.
Rotten Sound – Didn't watch--me and dr0ne were outside singing along to Slipknot over the PA and getting a spot for Hail Of Bullets.
Hail of Bullets – Like I said before, Van Drunen is amazing live. "Nachthexen" was as heavy as any song at the 'fest. Shit ruled.
Brutal Truth - Sat down in the back and relaxed and didn't really pay attention.
Misery Index – Briefly caught the end of their set before Immo. 'Twas pretty good, and loud as hell.
Immolation – Had to make a tough choice to leave 4 songs in to get a good spot for Birdflesh, but those four songs kicked immense amounts of ass. "Father, You're Not A Father" into "Swarm Of Terror" was epic.
Birdflesh – SO. MUCH. FUN. The between-song-banter and song explanations are hilarious, and they were really tight. Me and my friends throwing 200 Glo-Sticks in the pit = awesome.
Atheist - Sat in the back and relaxed. Something about the sound was kind of wonky, and I lost interest pretty quickly.
Pig Destroyer – Pretty good. Kind of bummed they didn't play "Junkyard God," but they did play "Jennifer" and "Pissangel," which ruled. Scott Hull was not happy about the left over Glo-Sticks getting thrown on stage.
Napalm Death - Again, sat in the back and relaxed, but it what I heard sounded good. Also, was too busy watching all the hood-ass security guards quell the Great Crustie Revolt of 2009.
Phobia – Didn't watch.
Bolt Thrower – Awesome set, and awesome setlist. We were a little ways back, but it still crushed.
General Surgery - Tons and tons of fun. They had some sound problems early on, but powered through them. The new singer and material sounded really good.
Wolves in the Throne Room – Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too tired to care. Left early.

Sunday

We missed a lot of bands on Sunday, mostly on account of being fucking exhausted.

Complete Failure – Didn't watch
Agenda of Swine – Didn't watch.
The Endless Blockade – Didn't watch.
Lair of the Minotaur – Didn't watch.
Magrudergrind – Decent, but kind of disappointing
Kill the Client – So fucking intense. Like entwined said, I bet they would kick ass in a basement show. Their lead singer scared the shit out of me.
Splitter – My first time hearing them, but I dug it.
Despise You – Bad.
The Red Chord – I had a blast. The "Dreaming In Dog Years" pile-on at the end was rad. Also, surprisingly well received.
Yakuza – Didn't watch.
Catheter – Pretty good set. Tight, but the low vocals were weak and I thought the whole set was kind of flat.
Krallice – Unfortunately, I missed this set.
Antigama – One of my favorites of the 'fest. Really tight, good setlist and length, high intensity and Sivy killed it on the drums.
Absu – Didn't watch.
Abscess – Didn't watch.
Aura Noir – Didn't watch.
Destroyer 666 – Didn't watch.
Trap Them – SOOOOOOOOOO GOOD. I'd never bothered to listen to these guys, which was a huge mistake, because they brought huge amounts of win. One of, if not the most, energetic sets of the 'fest.
Bolt Thrower, v2.0 - So much better inside. "World Eater" in to "Cenotaph" was awesome, and the whole set kicked my ass. Super loud, gut-rumbling heavy.
Devourment – My first time seeing them, but it was about what I expected...awesome. The pit was fucking nuts, and the SMN blow-up toys and monkey masks were hilarious, especially Bleeder in his short-ass cut offs and Jewski fucking the inflatable money. Also, Eston putting on the monkey mask made me laugh.
Sigh - Watched like 4-5 songs before a 1-woman mosh pit and sheer exhaustion made me leave. It was good shit, but really hard to be enthused about at the end of the weekend.

Here's a brief video of the Birdflesh set. Keep an eye out for the Glo-Sticks flying around--that was me and my friends:

It seems like there is going to be an official MDF VII DVD released, so I'll provide more details on that as they become available.

Also, check out Return To The Pit for all the pictures you could ever want. I didn't even bother with band pics, as most of them turned out like crap.

I'll be talking a lot more about the 'fest on Friday, as well as playing some of the music from the bands that killed it.

Holy shit, this rules

White Whale, Holy Grail

Behemoth's "Evangelion" Artwork

I think it's fucking awesome. Behemoth haven't always been known for their fantastic artwork (Zos Kia Cultus? Ugh), but this is super refreshing--not just in terms of Behemoth, but extreme metal in general. I really dig the faux-woodcut, Gustav Dore vibe.

Look for the album to be released August 11th on Metal Blade records.

New Gorod News

The news is that it leaked. I don't want to post the link here, as I respect the band and Tipton from Willotip (their label). But if you really want it, Google blog search is your friend...it's out there.

Sorry Guise

I know I promised to pre-record a Maryland Deathfest extravaganza to play on Friday in my absence, but I just couldn't get a 2-hour slot in the product ion room to get it done. Either DJ Autobot or someone else will take my spot this week, and it probably won't be metal, so...mah bad.

Look for the show to be back next week though, with a brand new kick-ass roll in. I'll still record an MDF show, and probably just podcast it. I promise I'll have a shit ton of pics when I get back, and hopefully, at the very least, I'll update the blog at least once daily from Maryland.

I Got A Prezzie For You

I've spent the better part of two hours trying to figure out how to podcast my show, and have completely given up--I have no idea how to "burn" a "feed" or what RSS is for, and I don't care...so I just uploaded this last show to Megaupload as an mp3. Click the link below, and get ya' ears fukked:

5.15.09 Download

I've got all of this quarter's shows archived on the computer in the DJ booth, and I'll upload them as well whenever I get around to editing them and shit.

Augury Guitar Video

Even though it's just a brief comp of some stuff off the upcoming album "Fragmentary Evidence," it still gave me a half-boner. The tone just on this video is infinitely better than the tone on "Concealed," and the riffs are fucking tasty. I am highly anticipating this album...enjoy:

New Suffocation Song

A month or so ago, I posted a live video of SUFFOCATION performing a song of their upcoming album (Blood Oath) called "Mental Hemorrhage." Today, the band posted a new song to their MySpace page entitled "Cataclysmic Purification," making it the second track from their new one available to the public.

Check it out here, and check out the CD Release page for the "Blood Oath" release date, and a shit ton of others.

I gotta' say, after one listen, I'm pretty underwhelmed. Nothing about that song particularly catches my attention--it's just kind of there. Hopefully this is either a weak song, or a grower, because this doesn't bode too well in my opinion.

New Clutch Jamz

Off their new album, "Strange Cousins From The West," it's called "Abraham Lincoln." Not really that metal, but these guys groove like sons of bitches and always put out solid shit.

Check it here.

New Asphyx Song

More new music, in the form of a song off ASPHYX's upcoming album "Death The Brutal Way," (June 22nd, Century Records) has been released. I don't see this album making huge waves or becoming an instant classic, this new material is brutal as fuck, and I anticipate a decent release from these guys.

Check it out here

New Gorod Song

"Programmers Of Decline" has made its way on to the interwebz, the second track to do so off their upcoming album "Process Of A New Decline." While I enjoy "Disavow Your God" a ton, this song cements PoD's album of the year potential for me.

Check it out here. Also, Willowtip is now accepting pre-orders for the album, set to be released on July 28th. Check out the link in the sidebar.

Spawn Of Possession Post Pre-Production Demo

It's short, and it's just guitars and bass with Guitar Pro 5 drums, but it sounds awesome. If you were hoping for Noctambulant II, then you're in luck, because that's exactly what this sounds like--really techy and really catchy. The bass sounds awesome too, and is probably so loud thanks to the fact that bassist Erlend Casparssen (sorry if I butchered that name) mixed it.

Check it out here.

Negura Bunget News

Official statement from the band:

This has to be one of the most difficult messages to be written. We are sorry to announce that Hupogrammos and Sol Faur have ended their journey along NEGURA BUNGET. Our paths are now apart. We wish them all the best on their new endeavors (their new project will be announced at a later time).

Meanwhile, a new NEGURA BUNGET line-up is assembled , which will continue the path started almost 15 years ago. Rest assure, we are keen to prove there is more to be said by this band, and we will work to fulfill our spiritual endeavor relentlessly .
All NEGURA BUNGET scheduled plans (concerts, festivals, contracts with Aural Music/Code666 Records and Prophecy Productions/Lupus Lounge) will be completed in the new formula. New website and myspace page are developed and will soon be online.

Negru, of behalf of NEGURA BUNGET.

The new official NEGURA BUNGET line-up is:
Corb - guitars/vocals
Spin - guitars
Gădineţ - bass
Inia Dinia - keyboards
Ageru Pamanatului - vocals/pipes/percussions/xylophone
Negru - drums/percussions

A word from Hupogrammos and Sol Faur: We would like to thank everybody who supported and believed in NEGURA BUNGET and invite you to follow our further musical activities.

Disappointing, for sure. But at least the band is still together and (planning on) making more good music.

Matt Sotelo Jam Vid

Here's a video of DECREPIT BIRTH's Matt Sotelo jamming some new material:

I'll admit that I'm not crazy about this clip; there's some cool riffs on there, but it sounds a bit wanky to me. But Matt said this album was going to be loaded with gnar riffs, and would have some songs with no solos a la "...And Time Begins," so he's got me pretty excited for it.

The Berzerker Used To Be Okay...

...now they are just awful. Check out this horrendous cover they did of t.A.t.U's "All The Things She Said":

I don't know which is more astounding; the fact that I made it all the way through that video or the fact that THE BERZERKER actually released this shit. Bring back the cool masks and leave the underage lesbian gimmick to t.A.t.U, they do it waaaaaaay better.

IHSASHN LIVE PERFORMANCE!!!11!!11!!1!!!!!

This is video footage of Ihsahn's first ever live performance, taken March 10th at the Rockefeller in Oslo, Norway. Norway's LEPROUS provided support as his band. The song is "Scarab" of his last album aNGL:

I'm speechless--flawless performance and that little bit of "Emancipation" at the end is a huge tease.

Portland's TOXIC HOLOCAUST have released a video for "Nuke The Cross" off their most recent album "And Overdose Of Death..."

Lotsa' News, Part III: Revocation Sign To Relapse Records

Official Relapse statement:

Relapse Records is proud to announce the signing of Boston-based metal band REVOCATION.

REVOCATION (David Davidson–guitar/vocals, Phil Dubois–Drums, Anthony Buda–bass/vocals) is currently recording their second full-length album and Relapse debut Existence Is Futile at Damage Studios in Southbridge, MA with Pete Rutcho. "Existence Is Futile" is expected to see a fall 2009 release date.

REVOCATION’s Davidson commented on the signing and new album; “After several years of hard work and determination we're glad to announce that we have signed to Relapse. We are all really excited to be working with Relapse to release our new record "Existence is Futile". We’ve once again chosen Pete Rutcho from Damage Studios to record this album and are wrapping up the vocals now. The material is really varied, ranging from very epic to an all out metal assault and we can't wait for people to hear it!”

REVOCATION released their debut album Empire Of The Obscene last spring. Audio samples can be heard now via the band’s MySpace page.

REVOCATION has a number of regional shows lined up, including a performance as part of the Relapse Contamination Tour stop in Boston, MA on May 10th. The band will also embark on a mini-tour in June alongside QUO VADIS and DARK FAITH. A listing of confirmed tour dates and cities can be found below with more to be announced soon.

I didn't post any of the tour dates, as they're all on the East Coast. Cool signing though, Revocation is good and it's good to see Canadian bands like them and Quo Vadis getting more American exposure and tour support.

Lotsa' News, Part II: Defeated Sanity Interview

Check out this interview with DEFEATED SANITY super-drummer Lille Grubber over at the Diabolical Conquest webzine:

Lotsa' News, Part I: Defeated Sanity Sign To Willowtip

Official Willowtip statement:

Germany's DEFEATED SANITY have officially signed with Willowtip Records. The band is set to head into the studio this summer to record their third full-length album, "Chapters Of Repugnance" for a late 2009/early 2010 release. Recording will take place at Soundforge Studios in Berlin. The bands previous full length “Psalms of the Moribund” (2007, Grindthic) is widely considered a classic in the brutal/technical death metal genre. In 2008, Defeated Sanity toured the US and also appeared at the Maryland Deathfest. Demo tracks from DEFEATED SANITY's upcoming album can be heard at their MySpace.

This is awesome as it probably means we'll get a US tour out of these guys at some point, plus no more insanely expensive European merch.
